Month: 04 / Term 3 Overview

Good afternoon, everyone. Month 04 is over and we already started the Term 3. Everybody are pretty excited now, because of the streaming selection and the new types of classes and teachers. Today we already had the first Game Art – 3D Modelling 1 Class. And it was very nice. We can see that the classes are even more focused when we are taking a streaming class. The teacher is awesome and he worked with a lot of games of the industry, since 1982.

Ok, first of all I will write here a quick summary about the last things that we did in class, in Month 4. Almost everything that we did I already said in the post about the Month 3, but I will add some last details. Term 2 finished with the following projects / assignments:

Game Theory (Digital)
We had two more assignments. One was the Game Concept Document 3, in which we needed to pitch a game based in the idea of Stickiness, that means that the company you “work for” wants to create and maintain a player base for an extended period of time. And the last assignment was to present another Game Pitch, but this time without anything specific that the instructor asked for. We also needed to create a Quicksheet supporting and explaining the design.

  • Assignments:
  • Game Concept Document 3;
  • Game Pitch Presentation + Quicksheet.

Game Audio
For Game Audio Classes we just needed to submit our Individual Final Audio Assets for the Flash Game. As a lot of students were doing different things for the project, the instructors were more nice and they asked us to show what we did for the game, related to audio, or what we did during the classes, to at least we be able to be evaluated in class.

  • Assignments:
  • Final Audio Assets for Flash Game.

Game Mechanics
We had two more assignments. One was the  Little Robot Army battlefield Balance Assignment, in which we needed to balance a combat between two sides of Robots (Blue and Red), following the tasks asked by the Instructor. We used one .exe that the instructors created using the Engine Unity. For example, one of the tasks was to Balance a 10 V 10 army that results in each side winning roughly 50% of the time. The sides must vary in 2 different categories by at least 10%. And finally, the last assignment was a Logic for NPC Behaviour, using graphics and conditions.

  • Assignments:
  • Balance Assignment;
  • Logic for NPC Behaviour.
Critical Analysis
We had three last assignments. It was kind of crazy everything that turned around it, because a lot of students had bad grades in the Game Proposal, Target Market and Competitive Analysis Paper Assignment. But because of that, the instructor allowed the students to do again and try to get a better grade on it. I was fine with my grade, so I just focused in the last two assignments, that was directed related between itself. We did a Reverse Engineering Paper – and a Lecture too – with a game that we could choose. In our case, in teams, we chose Shadow of the Colossus, and in the end we did a great job. I will post it in my articles section of the site later.
  • Assignments:
  • Game Proposal, Target Market and Competitive Analysis Paper Assignment;
  • Reverse Engineering Paper;
  • Reverse Engineering Lecture.

Level Design 1
The last assignment of Level Design 1 Class was the UDK DeathMatch Map. Unfortunately I didn’t finished in time , based in everything that I wanted to do. I was so focused and worried with the Flash Game, that I was kind of late with that. But to receive grades, I decided to submit the assignment with all the extra things that the instructor asked us. That assignment was pretty nice. The whole class had excellent results. And after that, we had one quick and surprise exercise in class, in which we needed to create another DeathMatch but in teams, during the period of class. It was awesome! I was responsible for the Art and Lights of the Level. You can see some pictures below, of my UDK DeathMatch Map that I did alone. I hope I can finish it with more time later, to be able to add to my portfolio.

  • Assignments:
  • UDK DeathMatch Map.

Team Management
We had a last assignment in teams. In our case, our team pitched the Oprah’s Charity Event Planner. We presented in front of the class and we received a awesome feedback from the Instructor. His classes was really great.

  • Assignments:
  • Team Assignment.

Game Art
In Game Art class we just had one last assignment in which we needed to create and organize textures for a Antique Chest, creating the Specular Map, Ambient Occlusion, Bump and Normal Maps.

  • Assignments:
  • Antique Chest Textures.

Flash
And finally, in Flash Class we finished and presented in front of everybody of school our Flash Game Jack. More details can be read in my last post here in the website. Please, check it out.

  • Assignments:
  • Final Flash Game.

BOOOOOOM! And that was the end of Term 2. It’s good to remember that the biggest project of Term 2 was the Flash Game.
