I considered Ethan as the game&#8217;s protagonist of Heavy Rain, and was based on his plot that I created this article.\u00a0This article was also used as one of my assignments in Storytelling Class at Vancouver Film School &#8211; Game Design Program 2012.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #993300;\"><strong>ACT ONE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Clear Setup<\/strong><br \/>\nIn Heavy Rain you see yourself in control of four different stories. Four characters, different lives and feelings, each one with its strengths and weaknesses, that somehow end up together in a central plot: The Origami Killer. <em>(Compelling Theme)<\/em> He is a serial murderer who is kidnapping and drowning little boys, leaving an origami figure on their dead bodies.\u00a0Heavy Rain question exactly that:\u00a0<em>\u201cHow far you will go to save someone you love?\u201d.<\/em>\u00a0And the answer is:<em>\u201cEverything I did, I did for Love\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.matheuspitillo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/heavy_characters.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1161\" title=\"heavy_characters\" src=\"http:\/\/www.matheuspitillo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/heavy_characters.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"530\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.matheuspitillo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/heavy_characters.png 661w, https:\/\/www.matheuspitillo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/heavy_characters-300x124.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 530px) 100vw, 530px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Ethan Mars<\/strong>, protagonist of this whole story, is a father, architect, married and has two children. His life could be seen as a trouble-free life, until an incident happens and he witness the death of one of his sons;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Madison Paige<\/strong> is a photojournalist who recently also attracted to the cases of the Origami Killer to get more information for your story. She suffers from insomnia, which causes it to her spend your nights in motels;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Norman Jayden<\/strong> is an FBI agent who ends up being scheduled to investigate the case of the Origami Killer. Early on we can see that his \u201cproblem\u201d is the main dependence on a drug known as Triptocaine;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Scott Shelby<\/strong> is a private detective who investigates crimes committed by Origami Killer. Like all the other characters, Shelby also has a physical problem, which in his case is asthma.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Inciting Incident<\/strong><br \/>\nSome months after Ethan lost his first son in a car accident <em>(Quiet Character Moments)<\/em>, his second son &#8211; Shaun &#8211;\u00a0disappears when both are playing in a park. <em>(Reversal)<\/em> Ethan space out at the park and when nighttime comes, Ethan recovers his senses and returns to the park to search for his son. Trying to find him in any place, Ethan returns to his house and search for Shaun in his bedroom, but the boy really disappeared. Ethan starts to question if his son was kidnapping by the Origami Killer.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.matheuspitillo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/heavy_rain_081.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1181\" title=\"heavy_rain_08\" src=\"http:\/\/www.matheuspitillo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/heavy_rain_081-e1328684134478.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"530\" height=\"297\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>A compelling central question<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">A story sets up a question to be answered:<em> \u201cWill Shaun be found before the Origami Killer kills him?\u201d<\/em>.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>First turning point<\/strong><br \/>\nAfter Shaun be kidnapped by the Origami Killer, Ethan leaves his normal everyday and decides to follow his quest in search for his son, trying to succeed in time, before Shaun dies.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #993300;\"><strong>ACT TWO<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Progressive Complications<br \/>\n<\/strong>The second act doesn\u2019t really begin until Shaun goes missing. Because of Shaun kidnapping, the story develops through a series of complications and obstacles. Ethan embarks on his rescuing journey and goes through five different obstacles that the player can choose <em>(Tough Choices)<\/em> if they want to follow exactly the Origami Killer rules, or trying to solve it in a different way. In parallel with the Ethan&#8217;s conflicts, the other characters are solving their own obstacles <em>(A Balanced Cast)<\/em>while searching for more clues. Madison has her encounter with Ethan and begins to help him on his journey.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<strong>Midpoint Sequence<br \/>\n<\/strong>When everything seems very bad in Ethan&#8217;s life, the midpoint sequence starts with the police suspecting that Ethan is the Origami Killer because of his psychological condition. After that, the rest of the game is remarkably more difficult<em> (Major Sequence of Action)<\/em> because the cops keeps trying to arrest Ethan during all his rescuing journey.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.matheuspitillo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/heavy_01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1169\" title=\"heavy_01\" src=\"http:\/\/www.matheuspitillo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/heavy_01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"530\" height=\"148\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.matheuspitillo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/heavy_01.jpg 1188w, https:\/\/www.matheuspitillo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/heavy_01-300x83.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.matheuspitillo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/heavy_01-1024x285.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 530px) 100vw, 530px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Second turning point<\/strong><br \/>\nEthan needs to do your last choice deciding if he will drink the poison &#8211; which will leave him with only one hour of life &#8211; that the Origami Killer offers to him, in exchange for revealing where his son is hidden. <em>(Set Up\/Pay Offs &amp; Convincing and Empathetic Antagonist)<\/em> A quick background story of the Origami Killer is presented.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #993300;\"><strong>ACT THREE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Climax<br \/>\n<\/strong>Is revealed to the players that Detective Scott Shelby is the Origami Killer. Depending of the players choice in the other parts of the game, Ethan will finally reach the place where his son is arrested. If Ethan has died before or didn\u2019t find all clues about his son\u2019s location, Norman or\/and Madison will confront the Origami Killer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.matheuspitillo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/climax_heavyrain.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1172 alignnone\" title=\"climax_heavyrain\" src=\"http:\/\/www.matheuspitillo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/climax_heavyrain.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"530\" height=\"249\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.matheuspitillo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/climax_heavyrain.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.matheuspitillo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/climax_heavyrain-300x140.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 530px) 100vw, 530px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>A Crisis Decision<\/strong><br \/>\nEthan is confronted with the Origami Killer and needs to decide whether to follow him to not let him get away, or whether to save his son who is trapped in a well that is filling with water.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.matheuspitillo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/hr_end.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1173\" title=\"hr_end\" src=\"http:\/\/www.matheuspitillo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/hr_end-e1328683685558.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"530\" height=\"165\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Resolution<\/strong><br \/>\nThe game ends with an epilogue showing the scene of Ethan moving into a new apartment with his son. Eu considerei a personagem Ethan como o protagonista do jogo e foi baseado em sua trama que eu criei esse artigo. Esse artigo foi tamb\u00e9m usado como um dos meus assignments da aula de Storytelling na Vancouver Film School &#8211; Game Design Program 2012.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">ATO UM<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Setup<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><\/strong>\nEm Heavy Rain voc\u00ea se v\u00ea no controle de quatro diferentes hist\u00f3rias. Quatro personagens, diferentes vidas e sentimentos, cada um deles com suas fraquezas e qualidades, que de alguma forma acabam juntos em uma trama central: O Assassino do Origami. Ele \u00e9 um serial killer que sequestra e afoga crian\u00e7as, deixando uma figura origami em cima dos seus corpos mortos. Heavy Rain questiona exatamente esse ponto: &#8220;At\u00e9 que ponto voc\u00ea iria para salvar algu\u00e9m que voc\u00ea ama?&#8221;. E a resposta \u00e9: &#8220;Tudo que eu fiz, eu fiz por amor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>Ethan Mars<\/strong>, talvez o protagonista de toda essa hist\u00f3ria, \u00e9 um pai de fam\u00edlia, arquiteto, casado e que possui dois filhos. Sua vida poderia ser vista como uma vida sem defeitos, at\u00e9 que um primeiro incidente acontece e Ethan testemunha a morte de um dos seus filhos. As coisas come\u00e7am a mudar drasticamente, o sentimento de culpa reina sobre o rapaz, no qual faz com que sua vida pare\u00e7a cada vez mais sem sentido. E quando tudo parece n\u00e3o ter como piorar, o segundo filho do rapaz \u00e9 levado pelo Assassino do Origami e \u00e9 a\u00ed que toda a hist\u00f3ria do jogo realmente come\u00e7a a se deslanchar.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Madison Paige<\/strong> \u00e9 uma jornalista fot\u00f3grafa que acaba tamb\u00e9m se atraindo aos casos do Assassino do Origami, para conseguir mais dados para sua mat\u00e9ria. Mas muito al\u00e9m disso, se encontra envolvida sentimentalmente pelo pai da \u00faltima v\u00edtima seq\u00fcestrada: Ethan Mars. Madison sofre de ins\u00f4nia, o que faz com que ela passe as suas noites em quartos de mot\u00e9is para tentar conseguir se controlar.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Norman Jayden<\/strong> \u00e9 um agente do FBI que acaba sendo escalado para investigar o caso do Assassino do Origami. Logo no in\u00edcio percebemos que o seu \u201cproblema\u201d principal \u00e9 a depend\u00eancia de uma droga \u2013 conhecida como Triptoca\u00edna \u2013 o que acabar\u00e1 sendo um conflito f\u00edsico e psicol\u00f3gico durante toda a hist\u00f3ria do jogo.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Scott Shelby<\/strong> \u00e9 um detetive particular que investiga os crimes cometidos pelo Assassino do Origami. Assim como todos os outros personagens, Shelby tamb\u00e9m possui um problema f\u00edsico, o que no seu caso \u00e9 a asma. Mesmo vestindo-se de uma apar\u00eancia de detetive dur\u00e3o, n\u00f3s tamb\u00e9m conseguimos observar um sentimento de aten\u00e7\u00e3o e carinho dele com seus clientes \u2013 os pais das v\u00edtimas assassinadas \u2013 o que nos passa durante boa parte do jogo um alto grau de seguran\u00e7a pela personagem.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Incidente<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>\nAlguns meses ap\u00f3s Ethan perder o seu filho em um acidente de carro, seu segundo filho &#8211; Shaun &#8211; desaparece enquanto os dois brincavam no parque. Ethan &#8220;se apaga&#8221; no parque e quando a noite chega eles se recupera e retorna ao local para procurar pelo seu filho. Tentando encontr\u00e1-lo em algum lugar, Ethan volta para a sua casa e procura por Shaun em seu quarto, mas o garoto realmente desapareceu. Nesse momento, Ethan come\u00e7a a se questionar a possibilidade de seu filho ter sido sequestrado pelo Assassino do Origami.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>O questionamento principal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><\/strong>\nA hist\u00f3ria gera uma pergunta principal a ser respondida: <em>&#8220;Shaun ser\u00e1 encontrado antes que o Assassino do Origami mate ele?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Primeiro ponto de transforma\u00e7\u00e3o<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><\/strong>\nAp\u00f3s Shaun ser sequestrado pelo Assassino do Origami, Ethan deixa de viver o seu dia a dia normal e decide seguir sua jornada em busca de seu filho, tentando ter sucesso em tempo de encontr\u00e5-lo antes que Shaun morra.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>ATO DOIS<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Complica\u00e7\u00f5es progressivas<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\n<\/strong>O segundo ato n\u00e3o come\u00e7a at\u00e9 que Shaun tenha desaparecido. Em consequ\u00eancia ao desaparecimento do garoto, a hist\u00f3ria se desenrola atrav\u00e9s de uma s\u00e9rie de complica\u00e7\u00f5es e obst\u00e1culos. Ethan inicia sua jornada de resgate e passa por cinco obst\u00e1culos diferentes que os jogadores podem escolher se querem seguir exatamente as regras do Assassino do Origami, ou tentar resolver esses quebra-cabe\u00e7as de uma maneira diferente. Em paralelo com os conflitos de Ethan, os outros personagens est\u00e3o enfrentando os seus pr\u00f3prios obst\u00e1culos, enquanto procuram por mais pistas. Madison t\u00eam o seu encontro com Ethan e come\u00e7a a tambem ajud\u00e1-lo em sua jornada.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Sequ\u00eancia Central<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><\/strong>\nQuando tudo j\u00e1 parece p\u00e9ssimo na vida de Ethan, a sequ\u00eancia central do jogo se inicia com a pol\u00edcia suspeitando que Ethan seja o Assassino do Origami, por causa da sua condi\u00e7\u00e3o psicol\u00f3gica. Ap\u00f3s esse momento, todo o restante do jogo se torna claramente mais dif\u00edcil, j\u00e1 que a pol\u00edcia fica em sua cola, tentando prende-lo durante a sua jornada de resgate ao seu filho.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Segundo ponto de transforma\u00e7\u00e3o<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><\/strong>\nEthan precisa fazer a sua ultima escolha decidindo se deve ou n\u00e3o beber o veneno &#8211; no qual o deixar\u00e1 apenas com mais uma hora de vida &#8211; que o Assassino do Origami o ofereceu, em troca da revela\u00e7\u00e3o de onde o seu filho est\u00e1 escondido. Uma r\u00e1pida hist\u00f3ria de fundo com o passado do Assassino do Origami \u00e9 apresentada.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">ATO TR\u00caS<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Cl\u00edmax<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><\/strong>\n\u00c9 revelado aos jogadores que o Detetive Scott Shelby \u00e9 o Assassino do Origami. Dependendo das escolhas dos jogadores nas outras partes do jogo, Ethan vai finalmente chegar ao local onde seu filho est\u00e1 preso. Se Ethan estiver morrido antes ou se n\u00e3o estiver encontrado todas as pistas com a localiza\u00e7\u00e3o de seu filho, Norman ou\/e Madison ir\u00e3o confrontar o Assassino do Origami.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Uma decis\u00e3o cr\u00edtica<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><\/strong>\nEthan \u00e9 confrontado pelo Assassino do Origami e precisa decidir se vai segu\u00ed-lo para n\u00e3o deix\u00e1-lo escapar, ou se vai salvar o seu filho que est\u00e1 preso em um bueiro que est\u00e5 enchendo de \u00e1gua.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Resolu\u00e7\u00e3o<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><\/strong>\nO jogo termina com um Ep\u00edlogo apresentando a cena em que Ethan se muda para um novo apartamento com o seu filho. Ethan pergunta a Shaun se ele est\u00e1 satisfeito com a sua nova casa e ent\u00e3o Shaun responde: &#8220;N\u00e3o importa onde iremos viver, desde que estaremos sempre juntos&#8221;.
