It’s been a while since I posted anything in the category Life at VFS of this website. This happened because I was expecting more updates for the Canadian Visa to report here. Well, in this post I’ll talk a little bit more about the time it took for the Visa process and, finally, how and what the medical examinations required by Canada involed. In my case, the medical was completed yesterday afternoon and I think I succeeded. Thank God! 😀

Once I had finally completed all the forms required to request the Canadian Student Visa, the forms for the Study Permit, and paid all the fees charged for it – as you can read in the previous post of the Blog, called VFS Acceptance and VISA – I decided to request the services of the VAC here in São Paulo in order to have extra support, and not risk doing something wrong on my forms. The care service VAC offered was well organized and attentive. The whole process and analysis of my documents took no more than 40 minutes and in the end I was given a tracking number to keep up with my Visa Application on their official website. The whole process of the Embassy analysing all of my forms, from the moment that everything was correctly headed to VAC by me, took 12 days.

When I accessed the tracking number of my application – 12 days later – the following sentence appeared on the VAC site: Additional Documents Required by the Embassy. This warning had the meaning that the Canadian Embassy was requesting additional documents to finally complete the Visa Process. As I was predicting, the additional documentation was the Medical Examination required by Canada. So I needed to return to the VAC and get a document with another form, which is also required by the Embassy and, at the same, was also provided with a list of accredited doctors to make such examinations, as well as the respective states that they reside. In São Paulo we have only four accredited doctors. To accompany the full list of these doctors in Brazil, visit the link here.

CANADIAN MEDICAL EXAMINATION
As I should have mentioned earlier, not all types of Visas, and not all locations, require medical examinations. For students who have their study time more than six months – which is my case! – the examinations are required. To ask questions regarding the obligation of the Medical Examinations in your country or your condition, read the official website of Immigration for Canada, okay? 🙂

Yesterday I finally conclude all the required Medical Examinations. To my surprise, the whole process was EXTREMELY FAST and I was treated very well from beginning to end. However, costs were very expensive. Among the few options for the city of São Paulo, I chose Dr. Celso Rodrigues Favo. The reason for this choice was because, in addition to being able to make an appointment in the same day, his office was also the closest to my house. In addition, all laboratory tests that he would request – extra to X-ray of the chest – could be also be completed in Lavosier Medical Center, Unit Angélica II, that was little more than a block from the Clinic. It is worth mentioning that this facility does not require advanced booking for X-rays. All tests are done in order of the arrival of the patient.

I booked the appointment to 4:30 PM yesterday, with the Secretary of the Doctor. I ended up arriving about 20 minutes early and I was soon answered. Both the Secretary and the Doctor himself treated me very well. Initially, she asked me to sign some documents and asked: three 3×4 photos, the extra medical examination form that the embassy sent to me and, finally, my Original ID. Then I was taken to the Doctor’s room and he completed routine questions – for example, If I usually use drugs, If I did some surgery, If I used any medication etc. Following this he measured me, weighed me, checked my blood pressure, heartbeat, looked at my throat, eyes and finally gave me the pot for me to deposit my urine.

The time it took the entire examination was approximately 15 minutes. It was cost 280 reais for the appointment, not to mention the amount equivalent to the freight shipping to Trinidad & Tobago, which we can choose to send via Sedex, about 65 reais, or send via FedEx, which arrives faster, but costs 110 reais. I chose FedEx, because of the urgency. It is worth remembering that his own Secretary who handles the results of the examinations in the Lavosier, and then makes the arrangements for sending by FedEx.

From the Medical Appointment I went to the Lavosier Medical Center, Unit Angélica II. Dr. Celso Rodrigues Fava gave me the examination requests and, as Lavosier is already familiar with this process of medical examination for Student Visa, they do have the report in English. I didn’t have to explain anything. I just presented the examination request and followed from room to room completing the tests. The exams for this case are:

Laboratory: Urine (type I), Blood (VDRL and anti-HIV);

Chest X-ray.

For those who have Health Insurance Coverage, you can choose to ask for the plan covers all of these laboratory tests and X-ray, but the Doctor which I chose is not accredited by Unimed – my Health Insurance – so, I paid for each one of the tests mentioned above, which ultimately amounted to 152 reais. And they told me that the results of medical examinations of the Laboratory only come out three days later.

The whole process of blood collection for laboratory tests and even the X-ray of the chest, and the waiting time to be attended after arriving in Lavosier, was only 40 minutes. I was VERY impressed with the speed and quality of care. The hospital has to be congratulated in my opinion.

Once I’d done all of these tests I got home. And now I need to wait for a response from the Embassy telling me if I was approved or not for my Canadian Visa. As soon as they call me I’ll go there and I can finally take my Visa. I’m predicting something around 2 and a half weeks for this whole process of the medical examinations results, the sending to Trinidad & Tobago and the return of my passport and Visa to Brazil. I’ll be updating here when I have an answer to this, okay? So we can have better sense of the total time of this whole procedure from the beginning.

Well, that’s it for now.
